WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF COSMETIC BONDING?
The purpose of cosmetic bonding, also known as dental bonding, is to make teeth more beautiful and functional by repairing an imperfection. If you have persistent stains, gaps between teeth, chipped teeth, or slightly cracked teeth, you should speak with your dentist about bonding.
It is less expensive than other procedures, it’s quick, it’s painless, and usually requires no anesthetic. The cosmetic improvement is immediately visible.
WHAT MATERIAL IS USED FOR DENTAL BONDING?
None of the tooth structure needs to be removed for cosmetic bonding. A composite resin, which is a sturdy, long-lasting plastic, is used to sculpt one single tooth at a time. It is applied to the tooth as a putty-like material, and then a special light is used to harden or bond the resin. We match the color of this resin to the color of the patient’s natural teeth.
WHAT PROBLEMS DOES DENTAL BONDING SOLVE?
Dental bonding may be used for the following:
To reshape a misshapen tooth for better appearance and function.
Fill a cavity more attractively with a tooth-colored resin.
To add volume or bulk to the tooth structure in case of wide spaces between teeth.
To protect the tooth roots, in the case that gums have receded enough to expose it.
To restore discolored teeth.
To lengthen teeth for aesthetic improvement.
To repair chipped or cracked teeth.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF BONDING TEETH?
The first step of tooth bonding is for Dr. Vazquez or Dr. Patel to select a composite resin whose color duplicates that of your existing teeth. Anesthesia is generally not required for dental bonding; unless resin is used as a filling for a decayed tooth.
The surface is slightly roughened and a conditioning solution is applied to prepare for the bonding. Then the resin is applied and molded to a pleasing shape and hardened with ultraviolet or laser light. After hardening, the final trim and polish produce a beautiful tooth that looks perfect with the rest of your gums and teeth.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF DENTAL BONDING?
Your dentist may use bonding to improve the appearance of selected teeth as part of a smile improvement plan. Bonding may be the perfect solution to repair a chipped tooth, close spaces between teeth, or change the shape of a tooth. Dental bonding costs less than dental veneers and dental crowns, as the resin is shaped in our office rather than being ordered from a lab. Compared to veneers and crowns, less of the tooth enamel must be removed.
Although dental bonding is effective, it is not quite as stain resistant as porcelain crowns, for example. While bonding lasts a long time, it is not as durable or strong as crowns or veneers; bonding materials may chip or break more easily if subjected to excessive stress.
